SHAH ALAM, 19 August 2025: The Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTAREC) was invited to participate in a live podcast session organised by the Cultural Centre at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam. The invitation came through Akademi Kepolisan UiTM-PDRM. This special podcast carried the thought-provoking theme “Jalan Raya atau Jalan Bahaya?”, highlighting a critical discussion on road safety in Malaysia. The session explored pressing issues such as the causes of road accidents, the risks faced by road users, and practical solutions towards transforming dangerous roads into safer pathways for everyone.

The podcast “Jalan Raya atau Jalan Bahaya??” highlighted the urgent need to address road safety in Malaysia, where accident rates remain alarmingly high. YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, VTAREC Co-ordinator emphasised that thousands of accidents each year involve loss of lives and serious injuries, made worse by neglected vehicle maintenance and the rapid increase of road users. She stressed that regular servicing, proper use of safety equipment, and leveraging modern vehicle technologies such as ABS, stability control, and AI systems are critical in reducing risks.
YBhg Prof Madya Ts Dr Basharudin Abdul Hadi, Pengarah (AKP), underlined that most accidents stem from human behaviour rather than poor road conditions. Speeding, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing seatbelts, and reckless motorcycling are among the most common offences leading to fatal crashes. He further highlighted the importance of early education, strict enforcement, and community involvement in shaping more disciplined drivers, especially among youth.
Both panellists agreed that road safety is a shared responsibility. Beyond strict laws against drunk or drugged driving, society must play an active role by reminding one another, reporting unsafe conditions, and setting good examples on the road. The discussion concluded with a clear message that Malaysia’s roads can only be transformed from “jalan bahaya” (dangerous road) into “jalan selamat” (safe road) if every individual takes responsibility to drive with discipline, care and respect for others.
