\u00a0<\/em>JOHOR BAHRU<\/strong>, 11 May 2026 \u2013 YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, General Manager of the Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction Council of Malaysia (VTAREC), delivered an impactful speech on the issue of vehicle theft crimes potentially contributing to road accidents in Malaysia, held in conjunction with Transport & Logistics Industry Seminar 2026 organised by Johor Transport & Logistics Operators Association (JoTran).<\/p>\n

During her presentation, YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid emphasised that both vehicle operators and vehicle owners must ensure the use of high-quality, legitimate spare parts.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>During the presentation, YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid highlighted a disturbing incident in which a tyre together with its rim, detached from a truck and rolled uncontrollably along the road before striking a motorcycle. The impact caused the rider to be thrown into the air and somersault before landing on the road. He also cited several similar incidents involving commercial vehicles, including cases of brake failure and other critical mechanical defects.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>YBrs Puan Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, General Manager of VTAREC also shared cases in which the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) successfully seized and curbed syndicates involved in the theft of lorries and trucks, which were subsequently dismantled and their spare parts sold illegally in the market. She stressed that without demand, there would be no supply.\u00a0 This illicit trade must be decisively addressed, as stolen spare parts not only cause financial loss and hardship to vehicle owners but may also be of uncertain quality, increasing the risk of mechanical failure. Such failures can lead to serious accidents and severe injuries to other road users.<\/p>\n

She noted that the road is a shared platform and the use of substandard, counterfeit or stolen components can significantly increase the risk of accidents, thereby endangering other road users. For example, brake failure, gearbox malfunction, or steering system defects can lead to catastrophic consequences. In private vehicles, a compromised ABS system may fail to prevent skidding, resulting in a loss of control, while the use of defective or previously deployed airbags can fail to provide adequate protection during a collision or even deploy improperly, causing additional injury. Similarly, wheel detachment or critical mechanical failures in heavy vehicles may trigger severe multi-vehicle collisions, putting other road users at serious risk and potentially resulting in fatalities.<\/p>\n

This is a clear call for all commercial operators to reject the use of illicit spare parts and prioritise road safety because lives depend on it.<\/p>\n

The seminar was organised to strengthen professionalism, operational safety and regulatory compliance across the logistics industry, particularly in preparation for the stricter enforcement framework expected to be implemented in July 2026.\u00a0 During the event, Transport Minister, YB Tuan Anthony Loke, said that lorry operators that have successfully obtained ISO 39001 Road Traffic Safety Management certification may soon be eligible for special incentives. He added that these incentives include access to a dedicated lane at the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (PUSPAKOM) and an exemption from the Road Transport Department\u2019s (JPJ) Inspection and Safety Audit (JISA). ISO 39001 is an international standard for road traffic safety management systems that establishes a structured framework to help organisations systematically reduce and prevent road traffic fatalities and serious injuries.<\/p>\n

Other speakers also shared their insights, representing PUSPAKOM Sdn Bhd, the Commercial Vehicle Investigation and Enforcement Division (JSPT), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Johor Contingent Headquarters (IPK Johor), the Road Transport Department (JPJ), and the Vehicle Audit Unit as well as the Licence Suspension and Revocation Unit of the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).<\/p>\n
